"Any idea when you're chatting with Haim?" an inquiry pops up. "My request was to ask if I can join as their extra sister."

However, there remains one problem: I also wants to be Haim's newest recruit. And we're in plentiful company. Multiple high-profile supporters have also begged for the honor.

It's clear something is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their path performing shows at neighborhood delis with their family. Today, they are multi-time Grammy Award contenders.

Like all the greatest bands, they're a inseparable unit. Their music videos often depict them marching in sync down the avenues of Los Angeles. On stage, they perform with such unfettered exuberance you find yourself thinking, "I want to be involved in that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that fans told us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I picked up a drum kit'," states Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That's the greatest compliment. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire people to make music."

"And thus anyone are welcome to be the next member of Haim."

Grammy Nod

The band are connecting from their homes, where they're taking a pause after an major tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

They're presently celebrating the news it's been shortlisted for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-woman band ever in consideration for the award.

"I follow the lists every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," notes Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The significance of the honor resonates with the trio.

"We really set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant achievement," says Alana. "However we're just appreciative for the women that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Laughter

The record came out of a time of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music captures that odd liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to move on.

The lyrics track departures and partings. The sisters want love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they are becoming.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a slogan. You have to make an effort in blocking the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Style

That recent resilience demanded a new sound – more raw and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that began with the drum sound.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our book," quips Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the right drum sound."

Stories and Collective Camaraderie

The trio's openness shaped the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their dating misadventures.

A former partner broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana told a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these breakups, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "Thus to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's incredible."

An Assured Path

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more confident of their standing in the music world.

They're festival headliners, with hit albums and an international following.

However Haim will consistently be their top commitment.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was little," says Alana. "It's like no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
