Rob Edwards and O'Neil are two of the initial names in the frame to replace the former manager as head coach of Wolves.

The previous coach was sacked on the weekend following the squad's 10-match winless start to the top-flight campaign.

And Edwards and O'Neil - both of who have historic associations to the team - are among the names to be considered by the Wolves ownership.

The manager is currently at Middlesbrough, which would create a potential obstacle to his appointment at Molineux.

However the former Luton Town manager - who made more than 100 of appearances for the club during his time as a player - is considered a leading candidate for the vacancy.

The mid-career manager is said to have backing from the Wolves board as they start the search of hiring a new manager.

O'Neil is also emerging as a surprise contender, even though he would be a shock choice given he was released by Wolves in December last year.

The ex- West Ham player is currently unemployed which means the club would not be required to provide any buyout fee.
